Morelos

Events and Festivals

Morelos was born during the age of the conquest. Because of this, its historical legacy is a fundamental part of its cultural wealth that existed in Mexico before the mixture of the races.

Morelos is one of the smallest states in Mexico at approximately 4,959 km2. Some of the 33 municipalities that make up the state include Cuernavaca, Cuautla, Jojutla, Tlanepantla, Tepoztlán and Zacatepec.

In economic matters, Morelos has an advanced industrial sector while still protecting the state’s ambience. It has important commercial areas including the most densely populated municipalities of Cuernavaca, Jiutepec, Yautepec and Cuautla. Some other productive areas include Jonacatepec, Tepalcingo, Yecapixtla and Temoac.

1,500 years before Christ, people were already living in Morelos. At that time, the area was known as Tamoanchán. This is confirmed by the heritage of two cultures: the Olmeca and the central plateau culture.

Morelos is known throughout the country and the world for its mild climate, neither cold nor hot. Cuernavaca is known as “La Ciudad de la Eterna Primavera” (The City of Eternal Spring). The wonderful weather makes Morelos a great area for water parks and recreational areas. The Nexpa River, Tepalcingo River, Cuautla River, Yautepec River, Salado River, Tetlama River, Tembembe River, Chalma River, Amacuzac River and Grande River offer beautiful scenery and landscapes.

The state’s archeological zones and museums reflect the power, tradition, mysticism and wisdom of the ancient indigenous civilizations that developed in the region. More than 800 ruins can be found in Morelos including Xochicalco, Teopanzolco, Tepozteco, Las Pilas, Chalcatzingo, Olintepec and Coatetelco.

Another important part of the culture of Morelos is their amazing colonial architecture. Strolling through the history and art, one can see how the centuries remain suspended in time in the form of majestic buildings, convents, homes and chapels constructed in spectacular landscapes. Visitors can soak in the Tequitqui art and know the sensibility of its native builders.

Art in Morelos is a national treasure like the monuments, museums and murals by famous artists like David Alfaro Siqueiros and Diego Rivera.

The culinary tradition in Morelos is as old as the pre-Columbian history of the region when a “corn culture” predominated in the stews of the settlers. Today, like long ago, corn is still a part of the traditional kitchen. Some of their exquisite dishes are toritas de tsompantle, flor de colorín, tamales nejos or ceniza, cabellito or frijol quebrado, la oreja de cazahiate, salsa de jumiles with blue tortillas, and, don’t forget, frijoles ayocotes with masa, rabbit with garlic chili, cecina with cream and fresh cheese, espinazo de cerdo in chiles amartajados, green mole or mole Tlayacapan-style, baked fruit, and the unequaled ice-cream from the north of the state.

The state offers an extensive range of tourist services for every need you may encounter. Even though Morelos is small, it is immense in tradition, culture, and tourist services - all of the elements needed for an excellent business trip or fun vacation.
