Nayarit

Nayarit is another beautiful state of the Mexican Pacific. Its attractive tourist spots coupled with its diverse native culture make it an excellent location for business or pleasure.

The state is approximately 27,621 km2 and is divided into 20 municipalities including Compostela, San Blas, Santiago Ixcuintla, Tecuala and the capital, Tepic. Nayarit is bordered by the states of Jalisco, Sinaloa and Durango and by the Pacific Ocean along its 289 kilometers of coast.

Commercially, the state of Nayarit counts on diverse industries to sustain its economy. These include cattle ranching, fishing, agriculture, timber and manufacturing. The rich nature of the state can be seen in the colors and textures of the mountain ranges, valleys, forests, farmland, ranges, volcanoes, rivers, lakes, marshes, beaches, and prairies.

Tepic, the state capital, is characterized by a modern urban feel adorned with rich architecture like the Cathedral, Ruins of the old Customs Building, Los Toriles, the Regional Museum of Anthropology and History, Ruins of the Virgin of the Rosary Temple and La Contaduría.

The culture of Nayarit has many things to offer, but the most remarkable are their excellent handcrafts made by the Huicholes and Coras, two of the indigenous groups that still exist in the state. Some of these crafts include vivid paintings, woven murals, beaded bags, skirts, blouses, shirts and underclothes hand-embroidered with cross-stitch, palm frond hats made with feathers and beads, bows and arrows, wooden masks decorated with beadwork, beaded bracelets, earrings and necklaces, reed flutes, lamps and dolls among others.

Nayarit attracts tourists with beautiful places like La Catedral de la Purísima Concepción de María, the Cross of Zocale Temple, the Government Palace, the Amado Nervo Museum (home of the celebrated poet), the National Anthropology and History Museum, the Independent University of Nayarit, the archeological zone of Ixtlán, La Tovara, Matanchén Bay, and El Rincón de los Guayabitos. Typical dishes of this region are oyster soup, oyster enchiladas, romeritos with shrimp tortas and Tejuino (maiz/corn fermented with Mexican brown sugar).

Nayarit also offers calm, relaxing and gently sloping beaches of very fine sand and smooth waves. Their hotels are excellent and offer multiple services and all the comforts of home.
