Nuevo Léon is one of the more industrialized states in the country, but it is also a very attractive state known for its natural beauty and varied tourist activities. Nuevo León is located in the extreme northeast of Mexico, is approximately 64,081 km2 (3.3% of the country), and borders on the U.S. state of Texas and the Mexican states of Coahuila, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. Nuevo Léon has a population of approximately 3.8 million.
Monterrey is the capital and most prominent city in the state and one of the most important cities in the country after Distrito Federal and Guadalajara. The diversity of ecosystems that can be found in Nuevo Léon allows for a multitude of outdoor activities like: mountain climbing, rappelling, mountain biking, spelunking, hunting, and sport fishing, as well as great entertainment and culture. Without a doubt, the most famous natural wonder in the state is the Cerro de la Silla (Hill of the Chair). At a majestic height of 1,288 meters above sea level, the Cerro de la Silla shades the great city of Monterrey.
The rhythms of the region are the polka, the huapango, the chotiz and the redoba. The typical dishes of the region are: roasted El Cabrito (young goat) in salsa, flour tortillas, fried goat and lamb, machaca with eggs, and a large variety of roasted meats. Beer is the regional drink par excellence.
According to the consulting firm, Mercer Human Resources, Monterrey is considered the safest city in Latin America. One of the reasons Monterrey has earned this distinction is because of the world-class events held here like UN meetings, O.A.S. meetings, and international level sports competitions. Industrially speaking, they are nationally known for their diverse array of products including steel, drinks, chemicals and auto parts.
