Chetumal Carnival
Carnival in Chetumal is one of the first festivals of the year, normally celebrated seven days before Lent. This celebration, with carnival masquerades and dancing, brings together the entire town for one of the most popular parties of the year.
Future International Tennis Tournament
The Future International Tennis Tournament is an important sporting event held in March at the Club Campestre in Chetumal. The match is endorsed by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in coordination with the Mexican Tennis Federation and the Quintana Roo State Tennis Association. This tournament has a $10,000 cash purse in the Singles and Doubles category in addition to points towards ITF ranking.
Chetumal Cycling Classic
The Chetumal Cycling Classic is a sporting event that takes place between the areas called Balneario Dos Mulas and Glorieta del Manatí. The race is a 3 kilometer circuit with participants from many different countries. Great prizes are awarded in the free, youth and master categories. This event stands out because all skill levels are encouraged to participate.
Horse Fair
The Horse Fair also takes place in March in Chetumal. This festival principally consists of an exhibition of the top equine breeds, professional judging and horse racing.
International Sport Fishing Tournament “Governor’s Cup”
In the month of April, the Tequila Beach Club in Mahahual becomes the host to fishermen from all corners of the planet. The fishermen take to their boats in hopes of catching the biggest Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Wahoo and Dorado.
Virgin of Fatima Fair
In the month of May, one of the most important religious festivals in the state, the Virgin of Fatima Fair, celebrates the patron saint of this region. The festival includes diverse religious and cultural activities, running of the bulls, rodeos and other events.
Hondo River Motorboat Race
Another great sporting event off the coast of Quintana Roo is the Hondo River Motorboat Race. Powerful speedboats compete in this world-class national championship that is sanctioned by the Mexican Federation of Motorboats A.C. The event consists of two days of competition. The first day of competition has three stages: Bacalar-Chetumal, Chetumal-Xul-Ha, and Xul-Ha-Bacalar. The second day is a lake circuit. This is the second-oldest race in Mexico after the River Raft Marathon.
International Southern Border Fair
In the month of October, the Chetumal expo facility is filled with color, folklore and culture for the International Southern Border Fair. This great festival interconnects products, customs and cultural aspects of several countries in Central America as well as some of the states of the Mexican Republic.
