Veracruz Carnival 2011

Carnaval was at its origin thought as a escape valve, a period where people should have all the fun they could before Easter. For this reason this festival is characterized for its liberty, joy & abundance.
A country where joyfulness is an inherent part of its inhabitants can’t ignore this celebration hence we have excellent demonstrations.
Veracruz, Carnaval (Mardi Gras) Its origins go back to 1866 and to the day is still considered world’s most joyful Mardi Gras. At the beginning the masquerade was celebrated in social halls, but the assistants were so happy that they used to go out to the streets and flood the city with their singing and dancing. Since 1925 a convention has been established for this celebration which is the creation of a parade that became the principal attraction.
The first event is called “quema del mal humor ‘bad mood burning’” , symbolic action representing the happy attitude that is going to last along the festivity while the end is settled by Juan Carnaval’s burial, a comical representation of a funeral and by the reading of Juan Carnaval’s testament.

Slowly these plays grew in importance, until the local government took interest. Guanajuato had recently been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city sought to become a center of national and international tourism. The first Festival Internacional Cervantino began September 29, 1972. This festival intends to explain the history of the Mole Poblano and how it is made. During the event there is tasting of representative dishes from different municipalities, as well as handcrafts exhibition. As a part of the event, those present enjoy a recreation of the history of Mole Poblano.
Exhibitions, artistic events, gastronomy, children’s plays, visits to the historical monuments and the contest “The Best Mole” are held every Sunday of June in traditional neighborhoods of the city of Puebla and other municipalities. The venue is Santa Rosa Cultural Center, in Puebla.
The Mole Poblano symbolizes the mixed races in Mexico, created in the baroque epoch in Mexico by Sister Andrea de la Asuncion, from the Convento de los Dominicos de Santa Rosa, as a tribute to Puebla’s Bishop Manuel Fernández de Santa Cruz and the Viceroy Antonio de la Cerda y Aragón. According to the legend, the different orders disseminated the recipe in the course of time until the present days.

Speaking of the Battle of Puebla’s Commemorative Parade, it is held during the traditional Fair in the capital of the state, regularly from April 30th to May 30th. A whole month with spectacle, family gathering and leisure for all ages.
In those days, the founding of Puebla is also remembered (the official date is April 16, 1531, in 2011 the 480 anniversary will be celebrated!) so it is also called “Founding Celebration”.
The Fair features cultural and recreational competitions such as Children Drawing Competition, Young Painting Competition, Fair Queen Contest and Charreria, besides the Palenque, Town Theatre, Bullfight, Expo Ganadera, Forums, etc. Even, during the Fair, the biggest saucepan with Mole has been made, with the help of dozens of cooks and hundreds of waiters who served this typical dish, with tortillas and the chicken covered with sesame.
Recently, we have had more than a million visitors in the Fair (not only local people but visitors from all the country and some foreign people) and a record daily attendance of 100 thousand visitors in a day.

San Marcos Fair

The Feria Nacional de San Marcos (San Marcos Fair) is a national fair held in the Mexican state of Aguascalientes every year for three (or sometimes four) weeks. Most of the events related to the fair, however, occur in the city of Aguascalientes, the state capital. The exact date of the fair varies every year but is set around April 25, the Feast Day of San Marcos.
Initially the fair was tied to the vendimia (harvesting of grapes) since wine production used to be an important activity in Aguascalientes. Nowadays, it is an important tourist attraction that is heavily associated with bullfighting and cock fighting. It is estimated that seven million people visit the fair every year and as a consequence hotels are usually filled to capacity, however some locals rent out their houses to visitors and go on vacation during this time.
The San Marcos National Fair is organized by an independent foundation that oversees the governance of what happens at the fair, but is supported by the state and city governments of Aguascalientes.
The fair is host to a large range of activities, of which bull and cock fighting are the most popular. Usually a concert is given by a prominent Mexican singer after a series of cockfights; this event tends to draw more attention than the fights themselves.
Located in the main fair venue are an assortment of sponsored stands and mechanical games, as well as stages where various concerts and theater plays are performed. The livestock fair and the charreadas still remain an important part of the celebration. Parties where traditional Mexican music is played (tamboras) are also celebrated on the streets of Aguascalientes. Finally, a casino is licensed in downtown Aguascalientes just for the occasion.
Concerts, art exhibits and other cultural events complement the fair in many locations around the state. The award ceremony of the National Award for Youth Art occurs in Aguascalientes during this time as well.

The foundation of this magical city will be celebrated on january 4. Merida was established over the remains of an ancient mayan settlement known atr the region as Ichcaanziho which means "five hills". With time it changed its name for T´ho and finally adopted Mérida, due to the fasct that the ancient Mayan buildings caused a deep impresion on the spanish conquerors, specially on Francisco de Montejo "El Mozo" who was recalled of the roman ruins that were kept on spain's homonymous city. He dedicated it to our "Señora del la Encarnación" , besides registering at the inauguration act, 7 spanish families and 300 hundred naturals were the first founding inhabitants.
The hispanic settlement received the title of "very noble and loyal city", besided its coast of arms, on the 13 of july of 1618 the king Felipe the II. The urban development of the first city responded to a square scheme, like a chess board. It has been said that one of the first founders execute it, surely following Francisco de Montejo´s original plan.
