Carnivals History
Carnival is a popular festival which precedes Easter and is celebrated on Christian tradition countries. The word comes from the Latin expression carnem levare , “keep meat off” alluding Easter’s meat eating prohibition. This celebration is accompanied by masquerades, colorful parades and the feasts that usually characterize these festivals.
There are many asseverations about its origins; some assure that it was born on ancient Egypt; some others think that it is related with ancient agricultural periods or well that its origin was in Rome. Nowadays carnivals are done on diverse regions around the world; the most colorful are Venice, New Orleans, Toronto and the great Rio de Janeiro Carnival. In our country, the most famous carnivals are Veracruz, Mazatlan & Campeche; there also appears, even if it is a little bit more discrete, La Paz Carnival.
La Paz Carnival
La Paz Carnival is 100 years old; it is believed to be the oldest carnival in Mexico, it started like small dances that were done on some ranches, some gentlemen attended and asked the owners for a dance with their daughters. Later it was settled as a big event organized on Juarez theatre, with dances and a queen.
Nowadays tradition continues and is celebrated with concerts, art events, fairs and lots of fun.
