Events

The state of Campeche has numerous celebrations, many of which are religious festivals full of activities and dance.

Candelaria Festival.
February 2
This festival is celebrated in Champotón, Candlemas, Hool and Campeche with dances, fireworks, games, parades and religious festivities.

Carnaval.
February
The Campeche Carnival has been celebrated for more than 450 years and is one of the oldest festivals in Mexico. The festival begins with the "Paseo Fúnebre y Entierro del Mal Humor" or "Funeral Walk and Burial of Bad Humor". Bad humor is represented with a rag doll dressed like a pirate and is walked through the streets of the city in a coffin and then burned to make way for joy. There are also coronations of kings and queens of the different districts, clubs, schools and businesses along with dances and music shows. There are several parades including: El Gallo de Reinas y Embajadoras, El Paseo de las Flores, El Corso Infantil, La Ronda Naval, and the traditional Bando. It concludes the day before Ash Wednesday with "La Quema de Juan Carnaval" or "The Burning of Juan Carnival". A rag doll representing Carnival is burned while his "widows" cry.

Festival of the Virgin of Carmen.
July 15-30
This celebration takes place in the city of Carmen with religious events, games, expositions, fishing tournaments and dances.

San Joaquín Fair.
August 15-30
The fair includes religious events, agriculture and cattle dealer expositions, and popular dances in the municipality of Palizada.

San Román Fair.
September 14-30
This fair starts with La Bajada del Cristo Negro in the district church. It is celebrated with religious and cultural events, games, and art and commercial expositions in the municipality of Campeche.
