Destinations

Chihuahua

Chihuahua is the capital of the state of Chihuahua. Its economy is driven by agriculture, industry, cattle ranching and the commercial sector. The valley where the city is located is surrounded by the Grande, Santa Rosa and Coronel Hills. These hills encircle an outstanding place of contrasting classic and progressive architecture.

Chihuahua has many attractions like the Cathedral, the Sacred Art Museum, the Municipal Palace, the Casa de Juárez Museum, the Quinta Gameros Mansion, Lerdo Park, the Municipal Library and the University Cultural Center.

One of the main attractions in Chihuahua is the Revolution Museum. One of the most important and recognized military leaders in Mexico's history, General Doroteo Arango Arámbula (better known as Pancho Villa), lived here. The museum was founded by his widow and displays many of his personal objects and photographs. The Monument to the Division of the North and the Cultural Center are also popular attractions.

The attractions of Chihuahua are clearly linked to the history of the Mexican Revolution. Another example is the Federal Palace. The jail is still intact where Hidalgo was held during his final days. The Altar a La Patria is the tragic site where the father of Mexico was shot. The San Francisco church is also located here. Hidalgo's body rested here before he was transported to the City of Mexico.

The natural beauty of the city and its surrounding areas are attractions as well. Some of these include Cuevas de las Monas and Ojos del Chiviscar, where many cave paintings still exist.

Ciudad Juárez

Ciudad Juárez ("Passage to the North") is one of the most important border cities in the country. Its main attractions involve exhibitions and sporting events like the running of the bulls, rodeos, dog races, car races, golf courses and an endless number of places to rest and amuse oneself day or night.

The city's most significant structures are the old customs building, the Historical Museum, the old Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, the Guadalupe Mission, the Infantry Quarters, the Revolution Monument, the Art Museum, the monumental Plaza de Toros, the old Presidencia Municipal and the Juárez Market.

For culture, a visit to the Museum of Archeology is recommended. It is located in Chamizal Park and has an interesting fossil collection found in the region as well as exhibits in the garden of reproductions from the amazing cultures of the Mexican Republic.

About 47 km south of the city are the constantly shifting Semalayuca Dunes. This is a great place to appreciate the flora and fauna of the desert.

Hidalgo del Parral

Hidalgo del Parral is located south of the city of Chihuahua. The city has an intense historical and economic past. It has witnessed many events and yielded an important mining complex.

Hidalgo del Parral proudly possesses one of the most complete archives of northern Mexico, their Historical or Colonial archives.

Its mining town character offers beautiful places like the Main Plaza, the San José Parish, the old Hidalgo Theater, the Santo Tomás Chapel and the Guadalupe Sanctuary. The Temple of Fátima, Stalfurth House and Alvarado Palace are also worthy of admiration.

The stone marker that covered the tomb of Pancho Villa before he was moved to Mexico City can still be found in the municipal cemetery. Many summits surround these attractions: La Muela, El Púlpito and La Borrega.

Barranca del Cobre

Barranca del Cobre is in the Tarahumara mountain range which is crossed by the Chihuahua - Pacific Railroad.

Barranca del Cobre is the general name given to a series of deep ravines and imposing mountains that rise to more than 3,000 meters in a landscape more extraordinary than Colorado Canyon.

No less than 50,000 indigenous Tarahumara people live here practicing their primitive form of agriculture.

This spectacular place begins in the city of Los Mochis Sinalo. The route crosses the colorful and magical mountain range of beautiful landscapes and low temperatures.
