Durango

The city of Durango is the state capital. It has a splendid historical center with beautiful, unique baroque architecture that adds to the beauty of this wonderful city.

The structures are varied in type and form. The Ferrería de Flores Hacienda, for example, has been completely restored. It was originally constructed as an industrial property for the production of iron in the 19th century. The Analco Temple is a Latin cross temple that dates back to the porfiriana era and was constructed on the old mission that first established the city of Durango. The Guadalupe Sanctuary began in 1653-1658 originally as a rest home. Other attractions include the Victoria Theater, the Cambrano Palace, the Plaza de Armas, the Durango Cultural Center, the Civil Hospital, the Avocado Building, the Smaller Basilica Cathedral, the Juarez State University Central Building, the Government Palace, and the Government House among other great examples of architecture in Durango. The Escarzaga Palace is a French-style mansion that emphasizes its romantic presence.

Some of the richest corners in the state are found in the state capital and its museums like the Durango Popular Culture Museum, the Avocado Museum, the "Angel Zarraga" Contemporary Art Museum, and the Book Museum. These are all dedicated to the preservation of the historical and cultural legacy of the city and state.

Textiles is an activity that has grown here and Durango has gained respect for the quality of its products. Food preservatives have become a regional emblem. Food storage and the ability to enjoy food outside is a specialty of this area.

Its rich natural surroundings offer spectacular scenes of nature like springs, rivers mountainous zones, and parks that have been turned into natural reserves because of the great variety of flora and fauna found here.

Gómez Palacio

Gómez Palacio is the second largest city in the state. Its growth has been based on the cultivation of cotton and wheat, making it a notable commercial and industrial center. Today the city has a great cosmopolitan feel. Its streets show the passage of history with its sober neo-classical style buildings mingled with its more modern structures.

Among its more notable attractions are the colossal statue of General Francisco Villa, located on La Pila Hill, the Chamber of the Young Heroes at the crossroads of Miguel Alemán and Victoria Ave., the Monument to the Teacher, the Monument to the Mother, (locatevd in front of Morelos Park), the Busto al Benemérito de las Américas, and the Francisco Zarco Chamber.

The architecture of the city is principally from the 20th century with structures like the Gómez Palacio Parish, constructed in 1900 by J. Agustín Castro.

The Museum of Modern Art, located in the Gómez Palacio Cultural Center, has a collection of foreign and national objects and paintings. The Xiximes Community Museum displays objects created by different ethnic groups that have inhabited this region.

Another outstanding tourist attraction in Gómez Palacio is the movie sets where many Hollywood films are produced, like the San Lázaro Sets. The Francisco Zarco Convention Center, the Alberto M. Alvarado Theater, and the Lagunero Rural Center are other great spots to visit.

Lerdo

Lerdo's economy is based on agricultural and industrial activities. It is located very close to the Nazas River in the region known as the "Lagunera Region". Its urban section is very attractive. A stroll through the streets and avenues will lead to discoveries of cozy corners and charming landscapes.

The municipality has a large variety of attractions like: the Municipal Palace, the Clock Tower, the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús Church, the San José Church, the Plaza de Armas, Victoria Park, the Monument to the Mother, the Benito Juárez Monument, the Alegría Fountain, the Tarín Chalets, Ríos Chabout, the Goma Hacienda and Church, the San Fernando Hacienda, the Loma Hacienda, the Juárez City Church, the monuments to Francisco Villa and Francisco Sarabia, the Hernández Luengas Building, the Municipal Market and the Municipal Pantheon among others.
