Tamaulipas
Tamalipas has a very unique geography. The state has a vast coastline to the East and borders the United States to the North. The combination of these areas results in a rich mixture of nature with a captivating beauty.
The state is approximately 79,829 km2 and is divided into 43 municipalities. It is bordered on the North by the U.S. state of Texas, and by the Mexican states of Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí and Veracruz. Their principle cities include Reynosa, Ciudad Madero, Nuevo Laredo, Tampico, Matamoros and the capital, Ciudad Victoria.
The industrial base that has been created in Tamalipas is known as a strong generator of employment and income for the country. The automotive, textile, manufacturing, electrical, electronics, chemical and petro-chemical industries sustain this enterprising state. Fishing is also important thanks to the 420 kilometers of coast on the Gulf of Mexico.
Tamaulipas has a lot of vegetation that transitions between the two natural regions: Neoarartic and Neotropical. Various ecosystems exist here including: tropical Caducipholic forests, Mesophyll mountain forests, pine-oak forests, pine forests and spiny forests. The impressive protected area of the El Cielo Biosphere Reserve is so unique and beautiful, it was listed by UNESCO.
The most popular places to visit in Tamaulipas are La Cueva de El Abra, El Nacimiento, Gómez Farías, El Cielo Biosphere Reserve, Llera, Novillo Canyon, Peregrina Canyon, Baños de Temascal, Cabañas de Joyas de Miquihuana, Cabañas de Canindo, the Tamaulipas Natural History Museum, Tamatán Zoo, El Sabinito and Balcón de Montezuma.
The activities in Tamaulipas are as varied as the ecosystems. Here you can enjoy kayaking, ecotourism, rappelling, hiking, mountain biking, boat trips, camping, bird watching, horseback riding, hunting and sport fishing. This state has more fresh water fishing than any other in Mexico due to its abundance of rivers and dams.
Various museums can be found here for those interested in the culture and history of Tamaulipas as well as archeological sites like the Balcón de Montezuma and El Sabinito.
Cooking in Tamaulipas is very similar to the other states in the northern part of the country. Goat prevails as one of the favorite dishes here. However, seafood is another staple along the coast. Some popular dishes are fruta del mar, jaibas rellenas jardín, corona, palomas de loma Colorado, seafood soup de la Rosa de Matamoros, Taco pirata Granero Grill, deer tamales and egg tortilla with shrimp.
