Chichimecas, Mexicas and Toltecas once inhabited the land that is known today as the city of Orizaba. When the conquerors arrived, this town stood in the way of the road from Veracruz to the city of Mexico making it very important to them.

Orizaba is surrounded by a great number of religious and civil structures that date back to the arrival of the Spanish. The city's bridges are another attractive tourist attraction. They cross the Orizaba River to El Pico de la Estrella, the volcano near the city.
