Veracruz

Destinations

Veracruz

Destinations

The city of Veracruz has a very important place in the history of Mexico since it was where Christopher Columbus and Hernan Cortes first stepped foot on American soil giving way to a new culture, new races and a new way of life.

Today, the Jarocho port is the most important in Mexico. It receives an immense number of boats originating from Europe, helping it to maintain its status as the entry point for everything European coming into Mexico.

The port of Veracruz, on four occasions, has earned the distinction of "Heroic" for the fundamental part it played in the defense of the mother country and its fight for independence.

The culture and architecture are a fundamental part of this port. Some of the most important architectural monuments in the city are: the Bulwark of Santiago, San Juan of Ulúa Museum, Ayuntamiento Palace, Cathedral of our Lady of Assumption, the Post Office and Telegraph Building, Francisco Javier Clavijero Theater, Recinto de la Reforma, Cristo del Buen Viaje Church, Venustiano Carranza Lighthouse, Municipal Palace, Las Atarazanas (the dockyards), Portal de Miranda, the Railroad Station, and the Civil Registry Palace.

Its museums provide an enormous window into the Pre-Hispanic culture, the conquest of the Aztec nation and the independence of Mexico. Some of these museums include: the Veracruz Aquarium, the Veracruz City Museum, the Reformation Museum, the Naval History Museum, Casa Principal, Bulwark of Santiago Museum, Agustín Lara Museum, Salvador Díaz Mirón Museum, the Art Gallery and Archive, and the Mexican Revolution Museum.

Xalapa

Destinations

Xalapa is the capital of the state. It is a colorful city based on the cultivation of coffee and even today holds onto its identification as a small town. This makes for an interesting mixture of city and small town aspects. Here you will see sights that seem very curious for a capital city, like milkmen delivering milk by horse and corn tortillas being made by hand preserving the indigenous style and art of tortilla making.

The architecture displayed in Xalapa clearly shows the sober "porfiriato" phase, as well as the influence of the French architecture that was prominent at that time. Examples of this style can be found in downtown Xalapa. Almost every point in the city has a beautiful view of the Citlatepetl Volcano or Pico de Orizaba.

If you like music, Xalapa is an excellent place to enjoy it. Here you'll find salsa, jazz, classical, and big band as well as disco, rock and electronic music in some of the best night spots in the city.

The Xalapa Museum is known for its imposing contemporary architecture and its wealth of artifacts and vestiges of the Olmeca, Totonaca and Huasteca cultures. The Museum of Technology, the ancient mansion of General Antonio López de Santa Ana which goes by the name of Lucero Mansion, and the El Tajín ruins are other great places to visit.

Without a doubt, one of the most popular tourist attractions is the representation of the Rockets of Papantla. This representation involves 4 men, who at an approximate height of 35 meters, tie ropes to their ankles and fall in a spiral as a fifth man sings a melody and plays an instrument at the top of the tower. Definitely something to see!

Córdoba

Destinations

The city of Córdoba was founded on April 26, 1618 and is an interesting mix of culture, history and fun. The history of this city can be relived in its museums where you can view relics from Pre-Hispanic times.

The city is also known as "The City of the 30 Horsemen".

Their main economic activity is the agricultural industry. Córdoba is very important to the state because it processes a great variety of products. Some of their major products are sugar, paper, coffee beans, oil, rice and tobacco.

Some interesting places to visit include Café de la Parroquia, la Dulcería del Tabachín, Pazzific, Genesis, Bananas, CantaBar de la Peña de Adán, La Burra, Utopia, La Divina Comedia, Hot Rock and La Cuija.

Orizaba

Destinations

Chichimecas, Mexicas and Toltecas once inhabited the land that is known today as the city of Orizaba. When the conquerors arrived, this town stood in the way of the road from Veracruz to the city of Mexico making it very important to them.

Orizaba is surrounded by a great number of religious and civil structures that date back to the arrival of the Spanish. Some of the most important churches are the Orizaba Cathedral, San Miguel Arcángel, Calvario Church, San Juan de Dios Church, Carmen Church, San José de Gracia Church, Los Dolores Church, San Antonio Church, Santa María de Las Servitas Church, Santa Gertrudis Church and La Soledad Church.

The city's bridges are another attractive tourist attraction. They cross the Orizaba River to El Pico de la Estrella, the volcano near the city.

Orizaba has everything, from modern restaurants with a huge variety of cuisines, to the comfort of hotels offering modern services and a place to rest in the heart of the city.
