Activities in Los Cabos

A large part of the attractions in this destination is constituted by a wide range of activities, the same for the curious and beginners, as well as adventure lovers and experienced in extreme sports. The most recognized and exciting tournaments or a simple walk and relaxation.

Ecotourism
Los Cabos offers a wide range of natural resources to be enjoyed. You can walk barefoot in the sand, go on horseback ride, gaze at the flora and fauna, go on a photographical or video safari and overall, acquire an important ecologic awareness. Desert, sand dunes, cactus and a plentiful marine fauna with estuaries where turtles and mammalians such as grey whale live, all these await the visitor to enjoy all the beauty of the surroundings.

In ecotourism grey whale watching stands out, it can be done in Bahia Magdalena, natural reserve for this species, which, during January and March, receives thousands of these creatures who come to the coasts of Baja California to breed and to be born. Bahia Magdalena, called “The entrance to the Pacific”, is located in the west coast of the state, entering by Puerto San Carlos or Puerto Adolfo Lopez Mateos (about 420 km). There are tours from Los Cabos, since it is an important attraction in the whole state.

Other recommendable places to go on trips are Cacti Mundo, a botanical garden with the largest and most important cactaceous plants collection of the country; Cabo Pulmo, which shelters an important aviary; and Marina de Cabo San Lucas, where you can go on a spectacular boat trips to El Arco and many other natural marine beauties in the surrounding areas of Cabo, pirate style boat trips where fun and party are a very intense constant. Quad rides
In a place known as El Chorro, in Santiago village, tourists who enjoy extreme sports will be able to ride the fantastic sand dunes in quads, arriving to one of the several sand cascades that cross the landscape. Near the place, the trip can be completed arriving to the thermal springs in San Jorge or Agua Caliente.

In Faro Viejo, an ancient monument only 19 km from Cabo San Lucas, you can enjoy an ATV Quad ride, which will be an unforgettable experience, as well as a horseback ride by the coast.

Sailing
Los Cabos has a huge fleet of special boats which you can use to go on a pleasant fishing day, either sports fishing or just to contemplate the great variety that can be seen in these waters.
The Marina features 380 individual docks and endless boats and yachts, with all the necessary in services and equipment to enjoy sailing. Right in front of the marina, is located Puerto Paraiso, one of the biggest commercial squares in the country, it offers restaurants and commercial establishments, being a typical meeting point for the tourists. You can have access to the Marina by aquatic taxi from El Medano or in your own boat. Other place to go hiking on boats or yachts, either to Socorro Island or to go diving is Solmar V, located in front of Finisterra and Solmar hotels. This place gives shelter to over 20 boats waiting for the vacationists.

Kayaking
Calm swell beaches that the municipality offers are special to practice kayaking, with the great opportunity of catching sight of species such as pelicans, seals and sea lions, among many others. The tourist can paddle, exercise and forget the everyday problems, sailing by El Arco, El Chileno, Playa del Amor, El Medano and Estero de San Jose del Cabo.

Surf
To practice surfing big swell and high speed winds beaches are necessary. In Los Cabos, the visitor will find the best places for this adventure, challenging their skills in beaches that break waves out of sea. The main recommended places to experiment this excitement are: Boca de la Vinorama, El Médano, Costa Azul and Acapulquito.

Fishing
Every year, specially the second semester, in Los Cabos and its environs, professional or amateur fishermen, expert or curious from all around the world can take part in sports fishing competitions (See Events Section), over 800 species with legal permission to be caught, are the temptation for thousands of fans of the adventure who participate in different tournaments of marlin, dorado (or mahi mahi), swordfish, sailfish, elephant fish and tuna fish (golden or yellow tail). Subordinated to the program “Captura y Deja Libre” (Catch and Set Free), some species such as black, blue and striped marlin, and sailfish are protected, even by awarding prizes for this care, this allows fun fishing and the responsibility of preserving the ecosystem by putting this species back in their habitat. In these cases the fish is caught, measured, photographed and thrown into the sea with high probability of surviving.

Other available species are jewfish, wahoo fish, Dorado, red snapper and tuna fish. These are edible species and it rarely is close season for them, so if you fish, there is a limited number allowed to keep with you; it can be filleted in the Marina and it is possible to cook the delicious fish of the day in the restaurants.
