Campeche is the capital city of the state. This legendary city guards a piece of Mexican history in its streets and alleys. The presence of the Spanish conquistadors and pirate invaders can still be felt here along with traces of the civil conflicts from the 19th century. The historical center of the city of Campeche is the hub for commercial, cultural, administrative and tourist activities in the state. Its architecture skillfully combines structures from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries with military, civil and religious buildings as well as office complexes and homes from the 20th century.
In the San Román, San Francisco and Guadalupe districts you can find buildings such as Casa 6, Carvajal Mansion, the Municipal Archives, Francisco de Paula Toro Theater, Campeche Plaza, the Municipal Palace, the Campeche library, and the Casa del Teniente del Rey. The most prominent religious buildings are Guadalupe Church, Campeche Cathedral, San Román Church, San Francisco Church and the old San José Temple.
One of the most attractive locations in Campeche is the Malecón. This modern structure runs along the coast for 3.5 kilometers and provides a beautiful ocean view.
