Colima

Colima has a colorful geography that invites rest and relaxation. It boasts beautiful beaches along its coast, rivers, pretty towns, rich culture and excellent museums.

The state is one of the three smallest in Mexico with approximately 5,455 km2. It borders Jalisco, Michoacán and the Pacific Ocean, and is made up of 10 municipalities including: Armería, Colima, Comalá, Coquimatlán, Cuauhtémoc, Ixtlahuacán, Manzanillo, Minatitlán, Tecomán and Villa de Álvarez.

The sights of Colima include transparent lagoons, hidden grottos, tall mountains, virgin beaches and magical towns that captivate visitors. Expeditions to Volcán de Fuego (Fire Volcano) and Nevado de Colima (the snow-capped volcano) are a popular attraction in this coastal state. Other activities that allow visitors to explore the state’s geography include: guided trips to the Manantlán mountain range, diving, kayaking, lagoon trips, camping, mountain biking, fossil observation, tandem paragliding or hang gliding, and boat trips.

Historically and culturally, Colima is a rich region where several Hispanic cultures bloomed in west Mexico. The capital city of Colima was founded on July 25, 1523 under the name Villa de Colima or Caxitlán. This was the second city council of new Spain. Colima invites you to explore its historical, cultural, artistic, recreational and folkloric corners including: the Government Palace with its neoclassical architecture and impressionist murals by Jorge Chávez Carrillo, the Lesser Basilica of Colima (formerly the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe), the Hidalgo Theater that dates from the XIX century, the Regional History Museum, the Western Culture Museum “María Ahumada”, with more than 700 pre-Columbian pieces, the Popular Art Museum “María Teresa Pomar”, the ruins of the San Francisco Convent, and the Pinacoteca Univeristy. Archaeological sites include El Chanal, La Plaza de los Altares, La Campana, Ex Hacienda del Carmen and La Petatera. One of the symbols of the city is the striking monument of El Rey de Colimán (the King of Colima) that represents the pre-Columbian and Spanish cultures. The inscription reads: “Colima raises here the virtues of its ancestry as a definition of patriotism.”

Colima is famous for its excellent sweets, such as coconut candy, chocolate and pineapple cookies, pulpa de tamarindo and pellizcos.

The most popular destination in Colima is Manzanillo, a paradise with high quality tourist services and beautiful beaches bathed by the warm waters of the Pacific. Here you will find sport fishing in what is known as the world capital of sailfishing. Manzanillo has been the host of the Dorsey International Tournament since 1954.

Colima, a state of contrasts waiting to be discovered.
