Estado de México

The Estado de Mexico has 13 million inhabitants, has a very prosperous economy and is one of the most highly industrialized states in the country.

The state has 122 municipalities and is approximately 21,461 km2. It borders the states of Guerrero, Morelos, Distrito Federal, Michoacán, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Puebla.

Metallurgy, auto assembly, and the production of chemicals, electronics and paper products can be found in Toluca, Tlalnepantla, Naucalpan and Ecatepec, the main municipalities of the state. Floriculture is another large part of the economy. The country also depends on the state for its agricultural products like grains, sugar, maguey, coffee and fruit.

Like most of the country, the pre-Columbian cultural and historical legacy is a very attractive part of the state. Here we can stand on ceremonial grounds, traces of pre-Hispanic cities with their monasteries, convents, churches and other buildings. This area was home to numerous pre-Hispanic cultures like the Tlatilca, Teotihuacana, Tolteca, Chichimeca, Colhua Texcocana, Malinalca, Otomi and Azteca.

In the state capital, Toluca, you will find the Cosmovitral, a botanical garden with more than one thousand different species of plants from all over the world, the old San Miguel Arcángel Convent, the Archeological Museum, the Museum of Natural Sciences, the San Francisco de Asís Fiesta, the Matlatzincas Park, and the most visited place in the country, the Pyramids of Teotihuacan.

Some of the most interesting places to visit in the state include: Acolman, la Presa Iturbide, Atlacomulco, San Mateo Atenco, Calixtlahuaca, Teotihuacan, Chalma, Tepexpan, Chapingo, Tepozotlan, Ixtapan de la Sal, Texcoco, Metepec, Toluca, Iztaccihuatl – Popocatepetl National Park, Valle de Bravo, and the Nevado de Toluca National Park. The archeological sites in the state of Mexcio are Teotihuacán, Malinalco, Tlatilco, Teotenango and Chalco.

Since the state is constantly visited by both tourist and business travelers alike, they offer great hospitality and high quality accommodations and services. You can also enjoy mountain climbing, horseback riding, water sports and many other activities.

The classic atmosphere of a great Mexican celebration is definitely not lacking here. Some of the festivities include: el Día del Señor de Burgos in January, el Desfile de disfraces en Almoloya del Río (Parade of Disguises) in February, the International Horse Fair in Texcoco in March, the Jiloltepec Exhibition (featuring farming, industry and art exhibits) in November, and the Posada and Piñata Fair in Acolman in December.

While visiting the Estado de Mexico, you must try the regional dishes like the very delicious chorizo (green, red, with liquor, with almonds, etc.) with egg or barbequed, hog feet, pig cheese, carnitas de Toluca, machitos, green rice and plátanos, orange duck, Mexican stew, molido or letras cheese, requesón (similar to ricotta cheese), and cuernitos sancochados (horn-shaped bread).

The Estado de Mexico is ideally located near the coasts of Guerrero and the very large and urban city of Distrito Federal, so it is an excellent destination for business or pleasure.
