Agriculture
Although it is not a fundamental activity, agriculture in the state is an area that is experiencing healthy development. Still many partially worked territories exist that need to implement technology and a more specialized technique. Without a doubt, little by little, the land is being worked producing the fruit of the state, barley grain.
Other important harvests are maize, beans, tomatoes, agaves, coffee, oats, pumpkin and chili. Alfalfa has better yields than the national average.
Cattle Ranching
Although the ranching areas are uniformly distributed throughout the state, the four main cattle ranching regions are: La Huasteca, the center of the state, the Valle del Mezquital and Tulancingo. The main cattle raised are bovine, goat and ovine, as well as bird breeding.
Bulls raised for bullfighting are also very important. Ten cattle ranches of this type exist in Hidalgo: La Huertas, Mala Yerba, Ajuluapan, Caltengo, Ernesto Cuevas, Heriberto Rodriguez, San Martin, Santa Elena, Xajay and Huichapan.
Mining
The state of Hidalgo is home to the most complete Museum of Mining and Mineralogy in the country, which illustrates the importance of this activity to the state. Despite the decay occurring over the last two decades of the past century, mining is still very important.
The state continues to be an important producer of gold, silver, lead and mercury. Currently, the town of Molango has the largest concentrated deposit of manganese in America. In other parts of the state, non-metals like limestone, kaolin, refractory clays, calcite and tellurine are extracted.
Industry
Industry is concentrated in three areas: Ciudad Sahagún, with smelting and parts manufacturing, railroad cars and automobiles, Tula and Huichapan, principle centers of cement production, and Tulancingo and Tepeji del Río, with its textile and clothing factories. The minerals that are extracted in the state are allotted for the most part to other entities of the federation and even to foreign countries for further processing. There are five mineral benefactor plants in the state: one in Pachuca, three in Zimapán and another one in the municipality of Lolotla. The most important are the company of Real del Monte,and Pachuca, S.A., and the Minera Autlán Company.
Tourism
Tourism is a very beneficial part of Hidalgo’s economy. The state offers national and foreign visitors impressive archaeological ruins and magical towns of great enchantment. Although it does not have beaches, it has other offerings of equal or greater value to the traveler looking for a relaxed atmosphere or cultural enrichment.
Pachuca, the state capital, has more than 1,000 rooms for tourists. Growth continues, with a great infrastructure and high-level services to ensure a wonderful visit.
