The state of Michoacán is known world-wide for the impressive natural spectacle of the annual arrival of the Monarch Butterflies which travel from frosty Canada to the sanctuary of Morelia, Michoacán’s capital city.

The state is made up of 113 municipalities and is 59,864 km2. Its southeast border includes approximately 210 kilometers of shoreline along the Pacific Ocean. Michoacán also borders the states of Guerrero, Querétaro, the state of Mexico, Colima, Guanajuato and Jalisco. Along with the capital city, Morelia, Michoacán’s other major cities include Pátzcuaro, Zitácuaro, Zamora, Uruapan, and Lázaro Cárdenas.

Economically, Michoacán is sustained by its very important industrial and tourism sectors.

The colonial architecture of the state is very distinguished, standing out among the picturesque zones of the Coast and the opening of the Balsas, as well as the borders of the Tepalcatepec River; the Tierra Caliente region with its center in Apatzingán, El Palacio and Tzintzuntzan.

The handcrafts of Michoacán are a result of the variety and beauty of its distinct and colorful raw materials. The hands of the Michoacáno have managed to preserve their art through many generations and can be seen in their pottery, silver work, musical instruments, hammered copper, feather work, textiles like tablecloths, napkins, ponchos, serapes, shawls, blouses, and even equipales furniture.

Michoacán cooking is a work of art in itself. Plaza-syle chicken, Morelian candy, the famous corundas (triangular tamales), Michoacán mole, pizole, white fish and trout prepared with strong herbs, tamales uchepos, el caldo miche (seafood and vegetable soup), churito, la morisqueta (spanish rice dish), and without a doubt, two of the most popular dishes, Chongos zamoranos (a very sweet, Mexican treat) and carnitas.
