Quintana Roo
Quintana Roo is one of the most important tourist states in Mexico. Quintana Roo is made up of 8 municipalities. They are: Benito Juárez, Cozumel, Felipe Carrillo Puerto, José Ma. Morelos, Lázaro Cárdenas, Isla Mujeres, Othón P. Blanco and Solidaridad. The most well-known locations are Cancún (in Benito Juárez), the Riviera Maya and Cozumel.
The history of the state took an unexpected turn on December 27, 1955, when Hurricane Janet completely destroyed Xcalak, Vigía Chico and Chetmal.
Quintana Roo officially became an independent state in 1974 under the orders of the Preisdent, Luis Echeverría Álvarez. It soon became famous for its natural beauty and logically became a high priority of FONATUR. This destination has more hotels than any other in the country, except, perhaps, for Mexico City.
The Riviera Maya is the home of much of the rich cultural and historical legacy of this region. The Maya heritage is preserved here in the archeological sites of Tulum, Xcaret, Dzibanché, Oxtankah, Cobá, Chacchoben, Kohunlich and Xel-Há. Here you can visit pyramids and buildings left by the most advanced pre-conquest civilization on the American continent.
Quintana Roo is approximately 19,000 square miles, is located on the eastern portion of the Yucatán peninsula, and is bordered by the states of Yucatán and Campeche as well as Guatemala and Belize. The flora of the state is rich in plants like achiote, cotton, anacahuite, chaya, carrizo, coconut, cocoite, corn, white mangle, orchids, palo de tinte, marine grass, uña de gato and sea daisy. Various mammals, birds, reptiles and fish make up the fauna of this beautiful state.
The beaches of Quintana Roo are world-famous because of their soft, white sand. Some of the most popular are Playa del Carmen, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Puerto Aventuras and Bacalar.
