San Luis Potosí

Destinations

City of San Luis Potosí

Destinations

Well-known as the "city of the seven districts", San Luis Potosí is characterized by its beautiful architecture that brings together both the neo-classical and baroque styles, through buildings like the La Paz Theater and the San Francisco Temple. It is known as well for its interesting museums, such as the Federico Silva, the foremost museum of contemporary sculpture in Latin America, and the Potosino Bullfighting Center, that proudly protects history and the culture of the Potosinas.

In these environs it is possible to explore beautiful natural locations, like the Media Luna Lagoon, an ideal place for diving, camping and ecotourism, the Sótano de las Golondrinas, an incredible abyss 512 meters deep and the Sótano de las Guaguas, a cave 291 meters deep. Let's not forget the "ghost town" of Real de Catorce, an old mining population full of magic and legend.

All these sites combine rich traditions that stem from a racially mixed inheritance, with wonderful spas, food and nightlife. It is an experience you won't soon forget and will entice you to make a return trip.

La Huasteca

Destinations

La Huasteca of San Luis Potosí is a region rich in fauna, exuberant flora and landscapes. This area is surrounded by water, and has many surprises for its visitors. The area includes the northeast plain and mountain range of the Eastern Sierra Madre. In addition, it is an important region for cattle, commercial, and agricultural development. Its paths and walkways boast yellow, red and purple flowers, birdsong and the sound of innumerable waterfalls.

Because of the beauty of its natural surroundings, La Huasteca is an ideal place for adventure tourism, such as mountain biking, rafting, hiking, and kayaking through turquoise blue rivers. It is also a great place for cave exploration in the Sótano de las Golondrinas, one of deepest caves in the world. If that wasn't enough, this area is also home to an archeological site that is most representative of the ancient Huasteca culture: El Consuelo, also known as Tamulín.

The cuisine of La Huasteca includes foods like caldo loco, pacholes, enchiladas, cured Huasteca meat and acamayas. It is not possible to speak of the Huasteca without mentioning Huapango, a type of regional folk music played with instruments like the violin, the harp and the jarana. This music is distinguished by its festive and even mischievous character.

By all accounts, La Huasteca "has heaps of flowers and misty mountains of illusion". It is an extremely attractive region for national and foreign tourists, who come to experience its many charms.

Ciudad Valles

Destinations

Ciudad Valles is located 263 km from the city of San Luis Potosí by federal highway number 70. The town was founded in 1533 and in 1827, Villa de los Valles became Ciudad Valles. Now it is the second-most important city in the state and the center of commerce within the region. Although it is a dedicated sugar and cattle producing city, with a provincial air, it also offers all the services found in a modern city. Some of its attractions include the Santiago de los Valles Temple-a Renaissance-style structure, the Presidencia Municipal and Colosio Park. Also, it boasts interesting archaeological museums: the Regional Museum, in which objects of the Tének, Tamuantzan and Huasteca culture are exhibited, and the Tamuantzan Museum which exhibits pieces from the Tantoc, Tamuín and Tének cultures.

The largest celebration, the Huasteca Potosina Regional Fair, takes place May 8th through May 28th. This fair offers cattle, commercial, industrial, and arts and crafts exhibits, as well as rooster fights. The traditional Holy Week and Santiago Apostle Festival occur from July 23rd to the 25th and consist of games, fireworks, music, dances and parades.

Tamasopo

Destinations The city of Tomasopo was formerly a famous missionary town during the 16th century called San Francisco de la Palma. The town of Tamasopo became a village and reached its peak with the establishment of the San Luis Potosí-Tamasopo Railroad. In its outskirts you will find beautiful places like Tamasopo Waterfall, Puente de Dios (Bridge of God), the Ciénega de Tampasquín marshes, Laguna Grande, and places like El Pozo Ancho and Las Adjuntas, where the Tamasop and Agua Buena Rivers meet.

A particularly attractive spot in this area is a group of three waterfalls up to 20 meters high, surrounded by mountains and lush vegetation. There is also an area of small beaches, and at kilometer 4, El Trampolín, a wooded place with small waterfalls ideal for camping. Here you can take long walks, enjoy beautiful vistas or simply plan a day trip.
