Veracruz is a very unique state because of the part it played in the discovery of America. Since the city of Veracruz was the first port of New Spain, it was the entry point through which the Spanish culture, riches from their conquests and different racial groups came to America.

The state of Veracruz is 72,815 km2, 800 km of which runs the length of the coast. Veracruz is the oldest city on the American continent and came into existence with the arrival of the Spanish people. It was the most prominent city in the country because of the massive flow of commerce through its port.

This invaluable history gives this area a very rich cultural depth. A large part of the Spanish bourgeoisie was based in this memorable city and left their unmistakable mark in the form of large houses in the typical construction of the age. This distinct style along with the natural virtues of the forests, plains, jungles and mountain ranges make this a unique destination.

Another side of history and culture that can be enjoyed in Veracruz is the legacy of the mother of all the Mesoamerican cultures, the Olmeca. This civilization is said to have settled down in this area several hundreds of years before Christ.

The people of the state are known for their happiness, friendliness, and feisty character, offering an incomparable sense of hospitality.

Another rich folkloric product that resulted from the mixture of the two continents, a vast array of cultures, and the fusion of the Spanish and native kitchens is their delicious dishes based mainly on fish and seafood.

On three occasions, the city of Veracruz has received the rank of “Heroic” for its defense of the Mexican flag in important battles.

Some interesting places to visit are: the Naval History Museum, Bulwark of Santiago Museum, the City of Veracruz Museum, the Revolution Museum, the Augustine Lara Museum, the Civil Registry Building, San Juan of Ulúa Museum, Municipal Palace, and Zócalo. One of the most popular and recognized festivals in Veracruz is Carnaval. Every year, Carnaval is celebrated in the port of Veracruz with the true flavor of the region in the form of dancing, shows and great celebration.

Veracruz is made up of 157 municipalities including Carrillo Puerto, Catemaco, Coatzacoalcos, Lerdo de Tejada, Orizaba, Veracruz and Zaragoza.

The Veracruz tourism industry offers a rich variety of hotels in many different price ranges and happily welcomes visitors. There are also many great activities to be found like river rafting, camping, mountain biking, rappelling, horseback riding, walking and mountain climbing.
