Yucatán

Events

A large number of celebrations, the majority of them religious, take place throughout the year in Yucatán. The festivities are held all across the state and are full of fun and dance.

Mérida Anniversary Festival
Beginning of January

One of the more important events in the state is the Mérida Anniversary Festival. The state capital is decorated in its most festive look to commemorate this popular anniversary.

Holy Kings and Cattle Fair
January

The greatest cattle festival in the state is held in Tizimín with exhibitions, conferences and music. This festival also celebrates the Holy Kings.

Carnival
February

The city of Mérida is full of color and fun for Carnival. This event includes parades, coronations, music, dance, art exhibits, a fair, games and ends boisterously with the joy of the Yucatán people and their marimbas.

Troubador Month
March

One of the most interesting festivals culturally is Troubador Month. Yucatán has a very unique musical history. The troubadour is a classic Yucatán symbol that helps create the character of the capital, Mérida, as well as the state. This festival brings together great troubadors to celebrate folkloric music.

Spring Equinox
March 21

In Chichén Itzá, one of the most recognized archeological sites in Mexico, the Spring Equinox is celebrated every year. This event is held in the Kukulkán Pyramid also known as “El Castillo” or “The Castle”. This practice was inherited from the Mayans. During the spring and fall equinox, the sun casts a shadow that resembles a snake formed by seven triangles of light descending to the stones at the base of the North steps. This is an impressive spectacle of mysticism and the Mayan culture.

Autumn Cultural Festival
October

Every October the city of Mérida hosts a month of cultural events.
